Founding the New Zion - 1831

In 1831 Mormon pioneers, having joined 19th-century America’s most dynamic

religion, emigrated from the eastern United States to Jackson County, Missouri.

In 1832 Joseph Smith, founder of the new religion, wrote a “new song” to encourage the emigrants: “The Lord Hath Brought Again Zion.”

More Latter Day Saints arrived, believing that Independence, Missouri was to be the

“Promised Land,” and that through hard work and unity of action

their dreams of a better life would come true.
